I always pore
over the journalism job sites. I picked up the habit of mining the classifieds
for story leads from a loathsome Argentine correspondent who worked for me once.
He was smart. Unfortunately, he was also a despicable, lazy and scheming
fellow. Did I mention he was smart, though?
A "soon-to-launch" Spanish-language
paper in Reading, Pennsylvania recently advertised in order to find and hire staffers.
The start of this one weekly is not in and of itself newsworthy but it may
become part of a future story proposal. The same with a second ad I came across
announcing that The Morning Call of Allentown, Pennsylvania is looking for a
Latino/Minority Affairs Reporter.
I mention
this only to shed light on the way I go about gathering news. Besides, it beats
rummaging through other people's garbage.
